High security fencing has been erected around a park in Birmingham in preparation for the visit of the Pope in just over a week's time.

Crofton Park is ramping up its security measures by installing steel fencing in advance of an open-air mass event on 19th September that is expected to attract over 70,000 people, the Birmingham Mail reported.

It is also thought that the 'Popemobile', the famous white vehicle, will be used during the Papal visit to transport the Pope around Glasgow and London. However, it is not yet clear whether it will be used in Birmingham.

The Catholic Church's Birmingham spokesman Peter Jennings told the newspaper: "Vatican officials have said they are very keen to see the Popemobile used.

"It's a legitimate aspiration because numbers are limited and there are a lot of people from other faiths who would want to see His Holiness but won't be at Cofton Park."

Some people have objected to the scale of the fencing, the news provider also said.

The Pope will be in the UK from 16th to 19th September.
