Perimeter security fencing will be refurbished and new metal gates installed at a cemetery in Wisbech to combat vandalism after a petition by residents, reports the Cambs Times.

The community campaign has spurred Fenland District Council to develop a redevelopment plan after thousands of residents signed the petition. The most recent incident at Wisbech cemetery, in which the graves of children were damaged, has angered locals.

Council officers told residents at a meeting that work would be done to deal with the problems. The newspaper reported councillor Peter Murphy as saying: "I would like to say how sorry I was to hear about the damage that had been caused to the children’s graves in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

"Let me assure you that the council is working with the community to prevent this damage re-occurring. This type of behaviour is unacceptable and I feel sympathy with those families whose children’s graves were damaged."

Metal gates will be erected outside the entrance to the site's toilet block, and security fencing will be improved to stop access once the cemetery is closed for the day.

Improved or brand new security fencing for sites like cemeteries, allotments and play areas are proving an effective choice for councils and development groups, with an allotment in Lincolnshire and a playground in Colchester benefitting from such security solutions.ADNFCR-3337-ID-800030618-ADNFCR
