Security fencing will be strengthened at Bradford city centre's urban garden ahead of a planned protest by the English Defence League (EDL) later this month.

According to the Telegraph and Argus, Bradford Council is spending £100,000 to strengthen fencing around the perimeter of the garden in anticipation of the event on August 28th.

Tony Reeves, chief executive of the council, told the newspaper that security measures must be taken.

"The police and the council have to plan for the proposed protests on August 28th well in advance, even before we know if they are definitely going to happen and what form they may take.

"To make sure that the city centre is safe for the people of Bradford if the protests do go ahead and that disruption is kept to a minimum, we will be dealing with any potential hazards."

Concrete blocks will be added to the fencing to create a temporary fencing solution. The blocks are removable so will be used elsewhere when needed.

The planned EDL visit has garnered a petition to ban it signed by over 10,000 people.

This month it was announced that a perimeter fence will be installed at tower blocks in Salford as part of a £14 million redevelopment package.
