The installation of acoustic fencing for a new JD Wetherspoon pub has been proposed after noise concerns from residents.

According to the Dereham Times, the pub chain has bought an old hotel in Church Street, Dereham, and marked it for a new pub development.

However Dereham town councillors, worried about the possibility of noise problems for residents living close to the site, have said an acoustic study should take place before consent is granted.

It is unclear how long the development will take, although it is thought unlikely the pub will be open in time for the lucrative Christmas period.

Eddie Gershon, spokesperson for JD Wetherspoon, told the newspaper: "The company cannot give any dates when building work is going to start and so there are no opening dates, but we are definitely going to open when the redevelopment work is completed."

In addition to the planned sound proof fencing, the company has applied to Breckland Council for consent to install extraction and air conditioning units.

Firms thinking about buying acoustic fencing should be alert to its benefits. It was recently reported that an acoustic fence in Carolina, US, was proving effective in stemming noise from a busy highway.
