Access control in Toronto has received a boost due to the completion of a major project in the area, it has been revealed.

The Globe and Mail has announced that security fencing in the area has now been finished, which will allow the area to be locked down to traffic at a moment's notice.

Constable Wendy Drummond, spokeswoman for the Integrated Security Unit, has announced that the security fencing for the traffic diversion zone will be used to control access from Friday evening.

Security checkpoints that will permit access to the zone will be based in locations that are to be announced later this week, although an additional perimeter will be based closer to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre that will prevent any traffic accessing the highest-security area.

Constable Drummond added: "If we have any reason to believe there's a security risk and we need to secure and close down that area completely, we have the ability to do that now."

Earlier this month, the constable told the Toronto Star that other precautions taken ahead of the G20 meetings include the removal of a number of landmarks, in order to reduce the risk of vandalism.ADNFCR-3337-ID-19849890-ADNFCR
