The South African Transport and Allied Workers' Union (SATAWU) has blamed the World Cup 2010 security staff walkout on the competition's organising committee.
SATAWU, the union which represents many of the security staff that have gone on strike over wages, has said that the organising committee behind the tournament is jeopardising fan safety by not providing adequate pay or training to staff.
Speaking to Goal.com, Zenzo Mahlangu, secretary-general of SATAWU, said: "The company, Stallion Security, should have been checked properly if indeed the World Cup organising committee were serious about doing this, and not just seeking to maximise profit."
"These stewards are not fully trained or checked properly, you need to vet people, see if they have criminal records," he added.
In response, Danny Jordaan, the head of the local organising committee, said that while it respects workers' rights it is unacceptable for them to disrupt match proceedings.
High security fencing and the South African police were all that stood between fans and disgruntled security personnel when workers became angry over the amount of money they had been paid.
