A group of deer in Stoke Newington have been attacked by animals because of poorly deployed security fencing, it has been reported.
Dogs exploited space under temporary security fencing to attack the deer at Clissold Park, in Stoke Newington. The fencing was in place while redevelopment work was taking place, the Hackney Gazette said.
In August, intruders breached the enclosure, panicking the animals. One was injured and had to be put down.
Now an online petition, signed by over 1,000 people, is calling on Hackney Council to relocate the deer to a better site.
"I think the deer’s best interests should be at heart," Jemma La Baigue, who is heading the campaign, told the newspaper.
"A lot of people are coming forward saying they have been worried. It’s not a suitable environment for them at the moment and if local residents aren’t happy, then I think it’s important to follow up on that,” she said.
However, a council spokesperson said there were no plans to move the deer.
"The deer are a well-loved part of the park and we will do everything we can to ensure they thrive," the spokesperson said.
