Parking barriers look likely to remain at a car park in Northumberland after councillors rejected proposals to make parking free.
A special meeting was called at County Hall after the Labour Party said that free parking should be allowed in Blyth, Ashington, and elsewhere in the country.
However, journallive.co.uk reports that Liberal Democrat councillors voted against the motion, meaning the parking fees - which bring in around £1.8 million in revenue.
Counillor Jim Reid, the council's Liberal Democrat leader, told the news provider that traffic will become busier if free parking was introduced.
"If it is free then people who get on the bus at present will decide to take their cars instead and we could have chaos in towns like Berwick, Alnwick and Morpeth. They would simply fill up at peak times," he explained.
Wakefield is also in the process of reviewing its car parking charges, which could see the scrapping of no charges in the first hour.
