Work on a long-awaited shopping centre in Bradford is set to restart in the new year.
The Bradford Broadway development was designed to be Westfield's latest major shopping centre and a further foray into West Yorkshire. Work originally began in 2008 but stalled for a number of years, so the announcement that it will be getting back underway is set to be a major boost for booth Bradford and the construction industry. Westfield stated that the project will generate around 1,500 jobs during the building phase. It is set to be opened in time for Christmas 2015.
Bradford Broadway will allow the city to compete with near neighbours Leeds and Sheffield which both boast major shopping centres. While Sheffield has the Meadowhall shopping centre situated just outside the city, Leeds has undergone some significant renovations in the past year. In March, the Trinity was opened providing Leeds with a new, state-of-the-art shopping centre complete with some of the high street's top brands.
Plans for the Bradford development will see the creation of a 570,000 sq ft facility with a 106,000 sq ft Debenhams department store and a 63,000 sq ft Marks & Spencer. These will form the main basis of the Bradford Broadway while a further 70 additional shops will also be installed. Retailers such as Next, Topshop, Topman, Sainsbury's and River Island have already signed up to the project.
Westfield recently sold its interest in the project to European retail real estate investment manager Meyer Bergman but will be involved to develop, design, construct and lease it. Officials at the company have already noted their delight that the project has been able to restart.
Michael Gutman, Westfield managing director UK/Europe and new markets said: “Westfield is delighted to announce the start of construction having remained steadfastly committed to delivering the Bradford development following cessation of work in 2008 as a result of the global financial crisis."
