A landowner would not have been jailed if he had taken on safety measures and installed parking barriers at a spot near a carpark.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) were alerted to the site owned by Nicholas Eastwood and found that part of the land near the edge of a valley slope was being used as a car park.
HSE then issued a prohibition notice to prevent access up to the point which would be considered dangerous and a risk to safety.
Nicholas Eastwood failed to act upon this and when emergency services were called in after a car was spotted hanging over the 30-metre drop to houses below, he was subsequently prosecuted.
Barry Trudgian, a HSE inspector, said at the hearing: "By simply installing a barrier, as he was requested to do, he would have significantly reduced this risk. Employers who ignore these notices, and continue to put people at risk, should expect to be prosecuted."
HSE is the national independent watchdog for work-related health, safety and illness.
Last month parking barriers were installed at Isle of Man carparks to make it more convenient for motorists in the borough.
