Background

Swedish vehicle manufacturer Scania has signalled its commitment to its UK network by investing in a new £6m flagship commercial vehicle centre in Brooklyn Park, Maidstone. With a large number of HGVs coming in and out at all hours of the day, Scania wanted to make sure that unauthorised personnel were kept out of harm’s way while also securing their investment from theft and damage.

Solution

As experts in delivering safe and secure sites, Jacksons Fencing was specified to supply and install perimeter solutions for the new depot, protecting Scania’s assets and ensuring the safety of members of the public.

Over 75m of Barbican® Imperial fencing polyester powder coated in Green RAL 6005 was installed around the site, along with an 8m wide vehicle gate with segregated pedestrian access. The installation creates a secure ring around the 2.5-acre facility with the vandal-proof fence panels and anti-climb design of Barbican® ideal for preventing unwanted access. Barbican Imperial® is highly customisable and can also be used on sloping or undulated ground, as it was at Brooklyn Park, providing flexible solutions for a variety of different environments and topographies.

Cris Francis, Head of Commercial Sales at Jacksons Fencing commented: “It is always fantastic to see new investment in the UK, and as a Kent-based company ourselves we are delighted to see a boost in the regional economy and jobs growth.

Any location with a large amount of heavy machinery including traffic from HGVs is always going to come with an inherent risk. While you can never eliminate this risk, it’s crucial that you mitigate it as much as possible. Having members of the public or animals wandering into the compound must be prevented; this is where we come in.

Our high quality perimeter security solutions are designed to prevent access to any unauthorised or undesirable individuals. Our Barbican Imperial® gates and fencing are perfectly designed to fit this purpose.”

The site was chosen for its proximity to the M20 and excellent links to the M2. It is an ideal location for both local operators and for those travelling to and from the Kent ports, in Dover and Folkestone which are vital links to Europe and the rest of the world. Scania Maidstone hopes that this new endeavour will bolster its UK infrastructure, promoting healthy trade across the country and abroad.

The state-of-the-art Scania service depot is as green as the fencing. The site features a subterranean fire-fighting water tank which is fed with rainwater harvested from the roof. There are also 300 square metres of photovoltaic panels mounted on the roof, supplying solar power to the development.

Another key ecological positive of the development was the relocation of great crested newts before any construction and fencing installation took place. The on-site pond previously occupied by the newts has been preserved, with bat and bird boxes and hibernacula now situated around its perimeter. Additionally, a seasonal wetland area to the west of the site has been formed in order to provide ecology interest.

Jacksons Fencing designs and manufactures high quality security fencing and has a wide range of perimeter protection solutions ideal for a variety of projects. Their team of technical and engineering experts have worked on many different bespoke projects, providing full turnkey support to meet any requirements their clients have.
