The project, called Building Something Big, will certainly be reaching out to a large audience – Twitter users send 50 million tweets per day, according to the website's data.
Anyone, from construction workers to government ministers, are being invited to take part. People are encourage to tweet, using the hash-tags #BuildingSomethingBig or #BSB, and also to upload pictures and videos.
The author of the best tweet of the day will be awarded with an Amazon Kindle.
"The aim is to generate a global snapshot of the breadth of activity across the built environment," said Michael Brown, the deputy chief executive of CIOB.
"Showcasing what a hugely influential, widespread, varied and vital industry construction is to the global economy and in delivering a sustainable future."
