Aberdeen FC's move to a new stadium has been delayed for another year, according to the club's chief executive.
The Scottish Premier League side is planning on relocating from its current Pittodrie home, which it has been playing at since 1903, to a new site in the Loirston area of Aberdeen.
Work on the new 21,000-seater stadium was due to begin earlier this year but has been revised and construction will not begin until 2013, with a proposed completion date of summer 2014, in time for the beginning of the 2014/15 season.
Aberdeen's chief executive Duncan Fraser said in a club statement that the delay was down to a dispute over who owned the land that the new stadium will be built on. The decision to delay the construction commencement date of the £38 million development will come as a blow to Barr Construction which had been awarded the contract to build the new stadium and it is hoped that a solution to the ownership of the land will be found in due course.
It means that Aberdeen will play another two seasons at their historic Pittodrie home and Mr Fraser is looking for the team to improve on the its ninth-place finish and compete for European places towards the top of the Scottish Premier League.
Mr Fraser said that everyone involved at the club was "extremely disappointed" with the club's past season where they finished ninth and only picked up nine wins and that the decision to move the club's relocation back another 12 months "will allow the number one focus next season to be in ensuring on the field success" and re-creating some of the historic nights during the early 1980s.
He added: "While the delay is disappointing, such is the scale of the project, it is imperative to ensure we are not giving ourselves unrealistic deadlines to work towards and we can now carry on with planning for a further two full seasons at Pittodrie."
