Acoustic fencing will be fitted around a Ministry of Defence animal training centre in Leicestershire as part of a major revamp to improve the quality and number of the base's kennels.
Melton's Defence Animal Centre (DAC), which trains dogs for use in combat zones, has applied for a two-phase replacement of its kennels, the Melton Times reports.
DAC dogs are being kennelled at private facilities because the current kennels have been deemed "not fit for purpose". But housing the dogs elsewhere is having a "significant impact on training", the newspaper said.
The DAC wants to up its number of kennels from 99 to 270, through two replacement stages of 80 and 92 kennels respectively. They will be equipped with acoustic fencing to reduce noise, and also feature separate areas for the animals to sleep and move around in.
Melton Council's development committee will give its decision on whether the project will go ahead in due course, the newspaper said.
The DAC covers four training areas: management and policy, animal welfare, veterinary medicine, equine and canine procurement and innovative training.
