Bath University's £100 million campus upgrade is nearing a start date after a firm was highlighted as being the front runner for the initial part of the work.

Construction Enquirer reported that Vinci is believed to have beaten a number of competitors to land the first stage of the development, which is due to take around three years to complete.

The company has managed to land a £15 million contract to build a general teaching building, which will form the first part of the major revamp of the university's campus. Officials stated that Vinci is thought to be ahead of the likes of Miller and Leadbitter to be chosen as the preferred candidate for the job which looks to improve facilities in Bath.

The university unveiled plans for the new development in August, which incorporates a variety of new buildings designed to provide a much better experience and surroundings for current and would-be students. Aside from the general teaching facility, which will stand five storeys high and contain two 350-seater lecture halls, there will also be a new £43 million student accommodation complex. This will comprise 708 en-suite bedrooms across 75 flats in two buildings.

Officials at Bath also revealed that there will be a new £10.9 million Centre for the Arts, which will be able to give the university a venue that will be available not just for the institute's needs, but also for somewhere that can play host to a public programme of arts events and activities.

Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell, university vice chancellor, spoke of her enthusiasm about the project which is due to be completed by the summer of 2014, adding: "Despite continuing economic uncertainty and the changing tuition fee landscape, the University of Bath is facing the future with great confidence.

"Our aim is to further enhance the university's ability to deliver an outstanding student experience; creating additional facilities for research, and an inspiring working environment, as well as providing cultural and economic benefits for the wider Bath region."
