Vauxhall tube station is set to undergo a major revamp after London Underground awarded an improvement contract to Bechtel.
The company will be tasked with redeveloping the station as part of a regeneration scheme of the Nine Elms area of London. Initial projections estimated the job to cost £45 million to complete, but this has since been downgraded to £36 million due to implementing a more cost effective construction method. It is also able to reduce its impact on the environment.
Vauxhall sits on the Victoria line running between Brixton and Walthamstow Central but also forms part of the South Western Main Line connecting the English capital with southern seaside towns such as Weymouth and Bournemouth. In February, Transport for London (TfL) announced that it would be putting more tubes on to the Victoria line to help reduce the amount of congestion seen during rush hour.
The organisation stated that passengers will now benefit from 33 trains every hour during peak times meaning there is less than two minutes between each train. Around 200 million people use the line on an annual basis and the TfL introduced a new fleet of carriages to ensure that it meets the demand of its passengers.
London Underground is looking to ensure that Vauxhall's upgraded station will provide improved services for all passengers that need to use it in the coming years. Officials stated that construction work is due to begin in early 2014 with a completion date earmarked for late 2015.
David Waboso, London Underground’s capital programmes director, said: “The modernisation will make the station step-free, give passengers more space and make journeys through the station quicker and more pleasant.
“Careful thought has been given to the environmental impact of the works and how we can reduce costs.
The Vauxhall renovation is part of TfL's focus on improving transport links across London that will help to support both economic growth while at the same time looking to create jobs in less affluent areas.
