A major flat project in Birmingham has been given the green light that will see a city centre office block converted into apartments for those working within the heart of the area.

Henderson Global Investors has announced that the city's planners have given it consent to begin the project at 1 Hagley Road, Five Ways, just a stone's throw away from Birmingham's vibrant restaurant and bar area. Officials have stated that the old office block, which was built for businesses in the 1970s, will be converted into luxury flats that will provide residents with "breathtaking views" across England's second city. The company has also been given outline consent, should it wish to pursue it, to construct student accommodation or a new hotel on the building's existing car park.

The Hagley Road development currently houses National Express staff members.  Officials at Henderson have revealed that the details of the plans include providing 182 "well-proportioned" city centre homes among the four penthouse floors. The company is also looking into converting the bottom two floors into a gym, restaurant, café or bar to suit the structure's new residential use and attract potential tenants to purchase property within the development.

Martin Payne, fund manager at Henderson Global Investors, said: "We are delighted to have received consent for this scheme, having worked closely with the council and our advisors to ensure the consent allows a viable development of the site whilst providing for improvements to local amenities and providing for affordable housing."

The location of Hagley Road means that those choosing to purchase property there will be right on the doorstep of Birmingham's vibrant centre and the local amenities that surround the structure. The city's lively Broad Street, chock full of bars, restaurants and entertainment complexes, is a few minutes walk away while those needing to travel are right next to Five Ways train station for links to the rest of the Midlands as well as Birmingham University.
