Birmingham's Paradise Circus is set for a major facelift after proposals for a £450 million renovation project were approved by the city council's planning committee.
The ambitious development will be undertaken by Argent which has been given the go-ahead to press on with the regeneration. Officials have revealed it will include the demolition of the old library building to make way for ten new structures in a series of new squares and streets that sit in the middle of England's second city.
It is set to give Birmingham an entirely different look and bring it into the 21st century in terms of architecture in the area.
Measuring at 1.8 million sq ft it represents one of the most ambitious and biggest city centre application to be submitted in 2012 and will completely reshape the heart of Birmingham. The Paradise Circus currently holds a number of shops and restaurants with a walkway leading on to New Street providing access to other amenities the city has to offer and the new development is set bring in more people to the bustling area.
Rob Groves, Argent's senior project director. said: "The redevelopment of Paradise Circus has the potential to make the most significant impact on the city centre for a generation.
"The site's combined qualities of its central location and historic landmarks creates an unrivalled opportunity to create a sustainable, first class environment that will transform this key part of Birmingham city centre."
The project director explained that the company is aiming to submit a detailed plan of the development, which will then be put forward for the public to view. Mr Groves noted that the project's first phase will be unveiled during late 2013 or early 2014 with work due to get underway after these dates.
It will mark the first scheme to be forward put as part of Birmingham's new Enterprise Zone which will help to provide £60 million in terms of infrastructure in the area.
