The introduction of security bollards could be among the measures taken by officials from Bishopthorpe Palace as it looks to improve the safety around the building.
City of York Council has received a planning application to introduce new security at the building, which is home to the Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu.
Yorkpress.co.uk reports that proposed changes are thought to have been put forward following a routine assessment of the building from the Church Commissioners.
A spokesman for the palace told the news provider that any changes "will not significantly affect the character or appearance of the building and landscape".
"Whilst we cannot comment about specific security implications or incidents, the current planning application to make improvements to security at Bishopthorpe Palace has been taken after a thorough assessment of current arrangements," he added.
A Grade I listed building, Bishopthorpe Palace was remodelled by Thomas Atkinson in the 18th century, while other upgrade work has taken place more recently.
