Luton Borough Council has installed new security bollards in the town in a bid to improve pedestrian safety.

According to Luton Today, the barriers have been installed on George Street and will be fully operational in March 2012. A number of authorities have also stepped up public safety in a bid to reduce the number of road traffic accidents.

The council's spokesman said: "Testing and commissioning will be undertaken shortly once the necessary utility connections have been completed. There will be additional signing and publicity before the bollards become fully operational."

In Whitchurch council figures were worried that there was a major safety risk with cars cutting into High Street and that it was only a matter of time before someone is injured or killed by dangerous driving.

Councillor Rob Hewson, deputy mayor of Whitchurch, told the Shropshire Star that an elderly woman was clipped crossing the road and that he feared that "next time somebody could be hurt or worse".
