Security bollards have been installed at a cemetery in Loughborough, Leicestershire, to protect war graves.

The university town's cemetery and crematorium has been subject to damage by cars that can not find enough space to park.

Members of Charnwood Borough Council believe that the site should be preserved and in respect for those lost in battle have taken measures to put an end to the damage.

Vehicles attending funerals at the neighbouring crematorium have been using grave ends as additional parking spaces and the council wants this habit to end. A similar step has been taken in High Wycombe where the local authority has erected high security fencing to prevent vandals desecrating headstones.

Hilary Fryer, councillor, said: "We have a dedicated team of workers who take great pride in looking after our cemetery, ensuring it is a place of beauty and calm for people to visit and remember their loved ones. We want it to stay that way."
