Bolton Wanderers FC have unveiled plans for a major development which will include an expansion of the Reebok Stadium.

The club's Burnden Leisure and Bolton Arena Trust have submitted proposals for a £100 million construction programme which will see the creation of new sporting and educational facilities near to the Championship side's home in Horwich. It will also incorporate the possible expansion of the West Stand of the Reebok Stadium, increasing the current capacity which currently holds over 28,000. Officials said that the ground improvement will just be one part of the plans with the Bolton Arena and the surrounding Middlebrook Retail Park also involved.

Phil Gartside, chairman of Bolton, said that the potential increase of the Reebok could help to attract new sponsors to the club and aid them to generate further revenue. He went on to say that investment is key to the project which was originally thought up in 1996 prior to the team relocating from their town centre Burnden Park home to the Reebok, which is situated six miles outside of Bolton. The development plans have gone to public consultation after which a final decision will be made on the project.

"Our scheme includes working closely with the Bolton Arena Trust to reconfigure the Arena. This would lead to a new sports building and also an upgrade of the football pitches and other sporting facilities, which would bring further benefits and usage for the community. There are also plans to build a new education and welfare building at the Arena, along with the expansion of the West Stand at the Reebok Stadium," Mr Gartside explained.

Bolton have been playing their home games at the Reebok since 1997 and during that time the team have experienced differing fortunes. They were relegated following the 2011/12 season for the first time since their promotion back to the top flight in 2001. During their spell in the Premier League they experienced European football after finishing sixth in the 2004/5 season.
