The Brent Civic Centre has been bestowed with a prestigious accolade in terms of its reduced impact on the environment.

Officials stated the London building, which was designed and constructed by Skanska, has been awarded an 'Outstanding' BRE Environment Assessment Method (BREEAM) Interim Certificate - Design Stage. This represents a significant landmark in the structure's progression and shows that the company has made a concerted effort to reduce the amount of emissions that the building generates and therefore lessened its impact on the environment within the capital.

Skanska noted that to achieve this level of recognition for the Brent Civic Centre it needed to conduct extensive research into how the building could be bettered in terms of energy efficient performance.

To attain the 85 per cent score and 'A' rated certificate the company underwent a number of changes to bring the building up to code in terms energy efficiency. Among the solutions that Skanska implemented were valve and metering systems, low-energy lighting, advanced dry water treatment flushing processes, as well as a waste bio-fuel-powered tri-generation plant.

Officials noted that these alterations significantly helped Skanska achieve reduced carbon dioxide within the building. There was also scope to cut down on the amount of nitrogen oxide that emitted around the structure.

Paul Heather, managing director, Building - London and south-east division, said: "This a fantastic achievement, not only for the project team, but Skanska as a whole. As the UK's greenest company, it is our job to set environmental precedents and this project is a great example of us doing this. As a team, we are looking forward to our next challenge."

The Brent Civic Centre is just one of a plethora of projects that Skanska is currently involved in. Officials stated that the company had recently completed a major development to double the size of a primary school in Bristol in the space of just six months. Hannah More Primary School can now benefit from six additional classrooms with space to accommodate a total of 420 pupils.
