Brentford FC have moved a step closer to realising their dream of moving to a new stadium, after the club purchased 7.6 acres of land on Lionel Road within the town to build a ground.
The League One side is looking to move away from its current Griffin Park home, at which it has been playing at since 1904, and into the new development which is due to hold 15,000 spectators; an increase of around 2,500 in capacity. The club has secured planning permission for the aforementioned size but will have an option of extending the ground to 20,000 should the team achieve successes to require a stadium of this capacity.
Brentford has purchased the land from Barratt Homes, which originally bought the premises in 2008 to form a development partnership with the club, but the site has since become a site used by industrial tenants. As part of the deal, Griffin Park will be knocked down to make way for family housing once the construction of the Lionel Road development is completed.
With League One becoming increasingly competitive as the likes of Coventry City, Portsmouth and Doncaster Rovers have all been relegated from the Championship into the division, Brentford believes a new stadium will help the club match the so-called bigger sides.
Greg Dyke, Brentford chairman, said: "This is brilliant news for the club and it is now full steam ahead for a new stadium. We will be submitting plans for the new development to Hounslow Council within the next year and our ambition is to move into the new stadium in time for the start of the 2016/17 season.
"The journey to Lionel Road has been a long and, at times, frustrating one but hopefully it is now coming to fruition. I said in the annual report that I believed it would happen in my lifetime and it now looks very likely!"
Brentford finished ninth the last League One campaign six points off a play-off place and will be looking to push for promotion to the Championship in the coming season.
