A cemetery gate in Bury St Edmunds is to be renovated under a new initiative by the borough council.
The local authority is to convert the Hospital Road's manual gate in to a fully automated one and it is the last of its kind to be changed over. The move is expected to save St Edmundsbury Borough Council £4,500 a year.
Currently the gate has to be closed manually meaning the cemetery is shut at 16:00 BST Monday to Thursday and 12:30 BST on Fridays. Those wishing to visit the place of mourning have been inconvenienced as it has been unavailable to the public over the weekend.
However, the council believes that this move will benefit those in the immediate area around the cemetery.
Councillor Bob Cockle said at a meeting, reported the Bury Free Press: "I consider this a service to St Edmundsbury and this town council should support the mechanisation."
Widower Ernie Broom also revealed that he had been unable to visits his wife's grave last weekend as there was no access to the cemetery.
