Maintenance of highways in Calderdale has been secured for another five years after the contract for the work was handed out to the preferred candidate.
Amey, one of the UK's leading public service providers, has been in charge of the Calderdale roads since 2000 and has landed an extension on the deal which will see it through until 2017 in a deal worth up to £120 million. The company has been protecting the area's network since the turn of the 21st century, ensuring that the road surfaces are consistent and repaired when appropriate. It is responsible for providing lighting to all parts of the road to deliver an improved condition for both individual motorists and freight services operating within the area.
Officials stated that Amey has secured an agreement with Calderdale Council, meaning that it will provide the region with a range of services starting from October 2012, lasting for five years with the option of an extension of up to 15 years should both sides see fit. Council officials have noted that the deal will see Amey maintain 1,100 kilometres of road throughout the area, 36,000 street lights as well as a whole host of other amenities such as drainage systems and emergency highway operations.
Both parties have already expressed their delight over the deal which is designed to secure the long-term future of the highways network within the Calderdale area and safeguard it against unforeseen circumstances such as freak weather conditions.
Mel Ewell, chief executive of Amey, said: "We're delighted to be able to continue our service in Calderdale. Over the past 12 years we have developed a strong relationship with the council and have worked hard to integrate ourselves into the borough. We look forward to continuing our contract and improving the transport network for the people of Calderdale."
Councillor Barry Collins, Calderdale Council's cabinet member for economy and environment, also expressed his pleasure at being able to secure a deal with one of the country's leading providers to the public sector.
