Allotment space in North Tyneside is set to grow thanks to a cash grant from the area's council.
Many had been calling for an expansion of the allotment space so that owners could plant more crops, as well as installing acoustic fencing and greenhouses. Now, more than 50 new plots will be made available in North Shields, Howdon and Wallsend.
The grant, believed to be in the region of £47,000, was given out by the North Tyneside Strategic Partnership and will help go towards installing a water supply to the plots as well as all the basic amenities.
Marietta Evans, director of public health for North Tyneside, said: "It's well-known that having an allotment and growing your own vegetables can be a very healthy pastime. Not only does it provide an active lifestyle, but it also encourages healthy eating."
Despite the decline in allotments over the years the Allotment Society believes there to 296,000 plots in the UK.
