Cardiff City are mulling over increasing the capacity at the Cardiff City Stadium to 35,000 ready for the start of the 2014/15 season.
Steve Borley, club director, explained that the board have been pondering a potential expansion of their home and, following the side's recent promotion to the Premier League, these proposals have been ramped up, WalesOnline reports.
However, Mr Borley ruled out the south Wales outfit playing any of their games at the nearby 74,000-seater Millennium Stadium during their inaugural year in England's rebranded top flight. Cardiff have not played in the top division since the early 1930s and are looking to mark their return in style.
Mr Borley, who is also managing director of CMB Engineering, stated that any expansion of the Cardiff City Stadium would not be ready for the 2013/14 season due to the procurement phase taking the "best part of a year". He added that the 2014/15 campaign would be a more realistic target as the construction process would involve taking the roof off the ground, which would have to take place during the close season.
Speaking to the news provider, the club director said: "We've never been presumptuous about our promotion. As a club it was case of getting it done first and then worry about the other bits later. It's a pleasant problem to be looking at and it’s something that will be high on the agenda, but my guess is that it would be very much for next season."
Following Malaysian billionaire Vincent Tan's takeover of the Bluebirds in June 2012, he outlined promises that would include £12 million being earmarked for the expansion of the stadium by 8,000 seats. His purchase of the club has not been without controversy however, with the owner insisting that the club changed their home shirts from blue to red, sparking outrage among some supporters.
The change of jersey colour has not affected the players' performance on the pitch as the Bluebirds have stormed to the Championship title, securing promotion with a 0-0 draw against Charlton on April 16th before becoming champions with a 1-1 tie away at Burnley on April 20th.
