Plans have been lodged to build the second tallest tower in the UK by property developer Chalegrove Properties.
The company is looking to build the structure, which will comprise of a 75-storey mixed-use tower, in London's Docklands area. It would become the tallest building within the direct vicinity, but would not top the size of the Shard, which is currently the largest skyscraper in Europe.
Construction Enquirer reported that Chalegrove is looking to make the proposed 239-metre high building predominantly residential, installing 864 flats and 84 serviced apartments.
Officials stated that the tower will sit on the site of the City Pride pub in Westferry Road, which is due to be demolished in order to make way for the structure. The land was owned by Irish developer Glenkerrin which was given permission to build a 62-storey tower in 2009; however when the company fell into administration in 2011 Chalegrove was able to purchase the site from administrator Grant Thornton.
There has been no definitive date on when the plans may go ahead or when it will be completed, but if the proposals are approved it will give London another giant skyscraper within the heart of the city. While the Shard stands at 309.6 metres, the Docklands building will slightly edge over One Canada Square which sits in London's business district at 235 metres.
The capital dominates the tallest buildings in the UK, taking the top eight spots and only Manchester's Beetham Tower and Liverpool's West Tower are the non-London entries in the top 20.
There are still a number of skyscrapers under construction, which will go on to dominate the capital's skyline, with both the Leadenhall Building and St George Wharf Tower nearing completion. The former will still be smaller than the proposed Docklands structure standing at 225 metres while the latter will be a meagre 181 metres high.
Both will be completed in 2014 and Leadenhall will become the home to US insurance broker Aon, which announced that it would be moving its headquarters from Chicago to London.
