Rising security bollards designed to protect people in Cheltenham are wreaking havoc in the town's high street, landing one man in hospital.
Unsuspecting shopper John Rowe was walking past Primark when he tripped over the rising barrier leaving him shaken and bruised. He was taken to the town's hospital after paramedics noticed an increase in blood pressure at the scene.
These types of bollards are common in many city centres and prevent cars driving up the main streets during peak times of the day. Cheltenham's controversial barrier was installed by the council in 2005 at a cost of £30,000. It was meant to keep the streets of the Gloucestershire town safer but in this case ended up harming one of its residents.
Mr Rowe told the Gloucestershire Echo: "You can hear a voice warning that the bollards are coming back up, but I wasn’t aware they were right under me. It came up immediately without any notice and I fell onto the ground. It made me feel sick to my stomach and I had to sit on a nearby bench to recover from the shock."
