The Circuit of Wales in Blaenau Gwent has been given the go-ahead and work is expected to start before Christmas.

Blaenau Gwent council approved plans for the land near Ebbw Vale to be transformed into a race track that will be home to all forms of motor racing, except Formula One. The £280 million development is expected to provide a major boost for the nation and the area around the facility. Around £2 million has been earmarked for community use while around 1,650 training places in construction and service-based industries will be created for locals.

Following the approval, preparation work is expected to begin in the coming months while the main construction work will start at the beginning of 2014. The Circuit of Wales is set to put the nation on the map in motor racing with the creation of a 3.5 mile track, a motocross track, international karting tracks and off-road driving facilities. It will also incorporate a hotel and business and leisure complex to accommodate visitors to the site.

The development has been reached thanks to a deal between the Heads of the Valleys Development Company and the council. This agreement means that the firm has committed to delivering employment opportunities for local people as well as generating a total of £750,000 for the community over the next ten years. This money will be used to help businesses and residents in Blaenau Gwent which are current in fuel poverty.

Officials stated that a further £1 million will be invested to community art groups, which will be commissioned with creating "statement" artworks for the circuit, which can also be used around the rest of the county.

Jonathan Jones, head of training and recruitment for the project, said: “This represents a huge milestone for Circuit of Wales and means we are now a major step closer to delivering the many jobs and opportunities the development will offer.

The Circuit of Wales will also look to compete with the likes of Silverstone when it comes to hosting events such as MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3.
