Security bollards installed in Clun, Shropshire, to prevent lorries crashing into an ancient bridge have been hailed as a success.
The bridge, which has been in the village since 1450, was struck by passing vehicles three times in the past year but since the barriers were installed in November there have been no more similar incidents.
Whilst the bollards were only due to be in place for a limited amount of time, it is now expected that they will protect the packhorse bridge, one of the oldest in the county, on a permanent basis after a number of residents backed the plans.
Many authorities have made use of the barriers in a bid to protect ancient sites, with councillors in Loughborough, Leicestershire, installing bollards to safeguard a number of graves being damaged at a crematorium in the area.
Nigel Hartin, councillor for Clun, told the Shropshire Star: "It seems to be working and since then there have been no accidents involving lorries hitting the bridge."
