The contract for a new office building in London has been awarded to a construction firm with work set to begin immediately.

Swedish multinational construction and development company Skanska has landed the £53 million contract to build the Moorgate Exchange project which will stand adjacent to Moorgate Station. The company will provide finance to partner client Telex SARL and will assist with its newly formed UK-based development group.

The completion of the 12-storey office building, which is situated at the site of the old Moorgate telephone exchange, is expected to be finalised by January 2014 so that businesses can move their operations to the building as soon as possible. The project covers 20,400 sq m with two roof level plant floors, a two-story basement along with ample office space. The location provides a key leverage point for companies looking at premises at the heart of London's business district.

Skanska officials stated that the company will be responsible for the design and construction of the building and will draw on all its expertise in sustainability credentials to provide both BREEAM Excellent and LEED Platinum ratings for the development once it reaches expected completion in 2014.

The building's architect HKR has designed the structure to have a large rectangular block combined with an angled roof which means there are opportunities for roof gardens on six levels of the building allowing tenants to have more outside space. The amount of room on the top floor will allow companies that take up these penthouse offices and be free from sharing premises.

London's business sector is in the middle of major development work as the towering Shard building is nearing its opening date and has already taken the accolade of being Europe's tallest building and the UK's second biggest free-standing structure, behind Emley Moor transmitting tower in Yorkshire.

The Shard will be home to offices, a plethora of restaurants and the five-star Shangri-La hotel. It is set to be officially opened on July 5th.
