Inverness College has moved a step closer with its redevelopment programme after a contractor was selected for the creation of a new campus.
Miller Construction has been announced as the company to take on the project which is aiming to provide a significant boost to the city's economy and the employment levels at a time of financial hardship across Scotland and the rest of the UK.
Officials noted that the firm beat off competition from the likes of Morgan Sindall and Morrison to land the contract. Miller stated the agreement is initially worth £50 million, rising to £75 million, and will see the creation of a brand new education facility within the Highlands area.
Inverness College is currently situated on the Longman, but under this new development will be relocating to a campus on the outskirts of the city, near to the A9. The college is currently part of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) and has the ability to cater for 8,500 students from all over the world. It provides an institute for undergraduates and postgraduates to attend who live in the remote parts of the most northern part of Scotland.
John Spencer, principal and chief executive of Inverness College UHI, stated that work on the campus will begin in early 2013, with a completion date earmarked for 2015 in time for the new term. Officials behind the plans have already spoken of the anticipation of the new facility, which they hope will be a boost not just to the students attending the new campus but for both the local economy and job creation.
Mr Spencer explained the current situation and the construction process and added: "We are certain the project will create many local construction jobs to boost the Highland economy. We are extremely excited to have a new purpose-built state of the art facility which will not only reflect the work of our students and staff but will also provide a superb student experience."
