Plans for a new ice arena in Cardiff have been given the green light after councillors approved the proposals.
The 3,000-seat venue will sit at Cardiff Bay's International Sports Village (ISV), with construction due to begin in August. The scheme is estimated to cost £16 million to complete and will be the new home to the Welsh capital's ice hockey team, Cardiff Devils. Developers Greenbank Partnership Ltd hope that the Ice Arena of Wales will be ready to open in late 2014 and play host to other sports events, such as Masters tennis and regular concerts.
Officials stated that the facility will house two ice pads, with the larger measuring 60 metres by 30 metres. This will be used to host Devils matches and, when not staging events, will be open to the public for skating, as will the smaller 54-metre by 27-metre ice pad. The development is expected to boost employment around Cardiff with the two-storey venue taking on 90 members of staff. It will include workers from the temporary rink, as well as those in the new Cardiff Devils shop, cafes and galleries.
Jonathan Smith, of Greenbank Partnership, told WalesOnline: "We’re determined it will make a difference to winter sports in Cardiff by getting more young people involved, not just in ice hockey, but in sports such as curling and speed skating."
The Ice Arena of Wales is just one part of the £250 million ISV scheme, which was also granted outline planning permission for later phases. This will see the creation of a 250-metre real-snow indoor ski slope built on top of a 1,300-space multi-storey car park and a 115-bedroom budget hotel.
It has been an exciting time for the city lately, with Cardiff City FC recently securing promotion to the Premier League. The club's title winning season has meant that board members are now looking at a possible expansion of the Cardiff City Stadium to help it increase matchday revenue and compete with the bigger clubs in the division.
