The Crossrail project in London has moved a step closer after Transport for London (TfL) announced that it had approved a major funding package.
Officials at the organisation said that it would be providing a contribution of £30 million to go towards a £90 million regeneration project for the locations along the route. It marks the next phase of the construction of this new rail network and it will become the first of its kind to integrate station designs with new and improved public space. The move is aimed to provide the maximum comfort for passengers using the new train system and regenerate areas in which the stations will be situated once finished.
As the Crossrail route is completed the development will then look to rejuvenating the surrounding areas in which it passes through. They are hoped to create new vibrant space which will not only benefit the commuters that use the service but also local residents and visitors that frequent the area.
The plans include 92,000 sq m of improved public spaces outside the new stations which equates to the size of four Trafalgar Squares or 13 football pitches. New trees will be planted along with seating and meeting places making the exterior of the station a much more pleasant place for people to enjoy.
Andrew Wolstenholme, Crossrail's chief executive said: "Crossrail's public realm plans are deliberately ambitious, exceeding our own requirements and raising the bar on what any other rail schemes have delivered before. We are using the huge momentum of this project to encourage further investment in new and improved public spaces and regeneration over a much wider area around Crossrail stations."
The Crossrail development will create a new train service that will link Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. There be a host of new stations at the likes of Paddington, Tottenham Court Road, Bond Street, Farringdon and Liverpool Street among others which will cost in the region of £2 billion to complete.
