The construction contracts of 13 new stations on the Crossrail network have been put up for grabs by Network Rail.
Officials have stated that companies are now being invited to bid for contracts to build and upgrade these stations which will form the western section of the London transport system stretching from Acton Main Line to Maidenhead. Network Rail revealed that there are a number of firms that have already lodged their interest in securing the deals, including the likes of the Morgan Sindall, Geoffrey Osborne, Vinci, Skanska and Balfour Beatty amongst others. The companies which are selected for the jobs will be responsible for both the design and construction side of the development.
There are a range of improvements that need to be carried out at these selected stations including expansions, renovations and extra building work. A number of sites have already been highlighted as stations that are in need of extensive work, including Acton Main Line, Southall, West Ealing and Hayes & Harlington which all require the construction of new buildings. While the likes of West Drayton and Maidenhead need platform extensions and refurbishment to handle the demand that the Crossrail development will bring to London.
Jorge Mendonca, Crossrail programme director at Network Rail, said: "Network Rail is transforming the railway to make Crossrail a success for the passengers who will use the service and the economic future of this region.
"We have developed our designs for the stations on the Western section, in order to provide better services for users and provide access to the communities served by the Crossrail route."
The Crossrail network is designed to provide a more frequent and quicker rail service across the capital, ranging from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.
While giving commuters another way to get to work during the busy London rush hours it is also designed to help alleviate congestion and crowding on the Tube system. The entire project has been earmarked for completion around 2016, allowing for more stress-free journeys around the capital for both locals and tourists alike.
