A shopping centre is set for major renovation work after the London Borough of Croydon planning committee gave the green light for work to begin.

The £90 million development of the Centrale Shopping Centre, which is set to be undertaken by Hammerson and designed by Leslie Jones Architecture, will see the installation of internal retail units and a "family-friendly" leisure space. The renovation work on the south-east London shopping centre is due to begin in 2013 and is expected to be completed by the autumn of 2014.

Hammerson officials have also revealed they have secured a pre-let extension with US-based cinema firm National Amusements for an 11-screen complex within Centrale and it signals the company's first venture into the UK market. Alongside this development will be the shopping centre's two flagship retail units, which have been earmarked for major fashion companies, and eight restaurant units. Hammerson has invested £50 million into the project which it believes will help to transform the area around Croydon.

The company, which also counts Birmingham's Bull Ring and Reading's Oracle among its properties, acquired the Centrale site in 2011 and since the purchase has worked tirelessly to improve the town's retail and leisure opportunities for consumers and businesses alike, while encouraging new investment from potential clients.

Lawrence Hutchings, Hammerson managing director of UK retail, said: "I am delighted with the positive decision from the council. Hammerson has worked hard over the past year to develop a scheme which will significantly enhance Croydon's evening economy and create a new leisure destination for the town."

The move follows the announcement by Southwark Council that it had given approval for a £30 million renovation plan on the Surrey Quays shopping centre. The developments will include 18 new units for stores and restaurants and is set to provide a boost to the area's job market as 500 jobs within the development which will be built directly in front of the existing structure.
