Children in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, were beaming with delight following the opening of a new play area.

Once the security fencing came down the fun could begin as pupils from Little Spring School were the first to try out the new facilities. The opening was a low-key affair, a fair contrast to the celebrations to a similar opening in South Shields which was met with "much fanfare", according to the Shields Gazette.

The play area was made possible after the Pond Park Community Association secured £20,000 of funding from Chesham Town Council for new equipment which the children picked out themselves.

Members of the group will also be using £1,500 of their own money to tarmac the area and purchase new benches for parents to use.

Derek Lacey, who is vice-chairman of the association and mayor of the area, told the Buckingham Advertiser: "The children were the ones who picked out what they wanted and I think it is fantastic."
