Diageo has unveiled plans for a new malt whisky distillery in Easter Ross which will cost £50 million to complete.
The drinks company confirmed that the site will be situated in Teaninich near Alness in the Scottish Highlands while at the same time there will be a major expansion project taking place at its facility in the Speyside region. Diageo is in the process of submitting a full planning application to Highland Council and is currently awaiting approval from the local authority before construction can get underway. The new development will be situated adjacent to the current Teaninich distillery but will be given its own name and identity.
Officials at the company explained that the site will contain 16 copper stills which will give it enough capacity to distil around 13 million litres of spirit on an annual basis amounting to 45 million bottles. Diageo also confirmed that the construction phase will bring in a host of jobs for local people while when it is completed the plant can be run on a 24-hour basis by just 20 people.
Brian Higgs, Diageo malt distilling director, said: “We are delighted to announce the next phase of investment in expanding our Scotch whisky production capacity in Scotland.
"All three sites we considered for the new malt distillery were excellent potential locations but after detailed investigations Teaninich came out just ahead in terms of the many complex logistics required when planning such a development.
On top of the plans for a new facility, the company is investing £12 million in the expansion of the current Teaninich distillery to double capacity. There will also be significant improvements carried out at both the Mortlach site in Dufftown and Glendullan.
The news comes in the wake of Diageo announcing that it is planning on cutting 80 jobs at its facility in Levenmouth. The majority of reductions will be in management with the action affecting 50 sites across Scotland and it is due to take place by June of 2014.
