An application has been lodged to turn a dilapidated building in Royston into a Wetherspoon's pub, it has been revealed.
The Cambridge News reported that the Manor House Club in Melbourn Street is falling in to a state of disrepair having been closed 18 months ago. It was used as a social club since 1919 but was forced to slam the doors shut due to a lack of membership.
JD Wetherspoon has now forwarded its proposals for a £1 million refurbishment, with support coming from two councillors.
Councillor Bob Smith, who is the chairman of the local council's finance committee, said that the application should be welcomed as it will help to reverse the fortunes of the listed building.
Eddie Gershon, spokesman for JD Wetherspoon, told the Cambridge News: "We will invest £1 million in developing the site, it's a busy town and we think people will be interested. It will be a welcome addition to the choice in Royston. At present we still have to apply for a licence for the new pub – we will look to apply in the near future."
Meanwhile, the pub chain is also looking to redevelop a former Harry Ramsden's fish and chip restaurant in Cardiff. Around £1.3 million will be invested and it is hoped that the tavern will be open by the middle of 2013.
"We have been seeking suitable premises in Cardiff Bay for some time and we feel that this building will give JD Wetherspoon an excellent prominence in the bay. We feel this is a great acquisition for the company and shows our ongoing confidence in Cardiff and south Wales generally," said a spokesperson.
The pub chain has already signed a 30-year lease on property, which has two storeys and spans 12,000 square feet. There will be a one-year rent-free period which is spread over the first five years of the term.
When the pub opens, it will add to existing Wetherspoons in Cardiff, such as the Gatekeeper on Westgate Street.
