A motorist has been fined £360 and given five penalty points after an incident which led to 30 metres of fencing being torn down.

The Galloway Gazette reported that 23-year-old Gaetano Lisi, from Stranraer, admitted to driving without due care and attention, and failing to report the accident.

Drivers have a duty to report any incident to police within 24 hours of it happening.

It took place on the Old Portpatrick Road on July 7th, and Mr Lisi also denied a charge of falling asleep at the wheel.

The court was told that Mr Lisi was driving home at midnight and mounted the verge after turning a left-hand bend.

His car collided with the fencing before he then managed to drive out of the field after finding a nearby gate.

An attempt was made by Mr Lisi's step-father to contact the farmer so that the fence could be fixed, however, the wrong person was spoken to and the driver had already been charged by police.
