A children's group in Eastbourne is a step closer to getting a new outdoor play area after the town's local police force handed over a cheque for £300.

The youngsters at Old Town Children's Centre were clearly enthralled by the news that they would soon see the security fencing go up as construction of their new play area got underway.

Kasia Rudnicka, the police community support officer for the Old Town area, said that the money would help pay for new equipment and that it would put some "smiles on the childrens' faces".

A spokesperson for the Children's Centre said: "This is fantastic! The support is so much appreciated. The funding will go towards purchasing a climbing frame for the play area outside for the children."

Eastbourne is just one of a number of towns that is getting a new play area after work for a new facility in Winshill, Staffordshire, was approved by the council following a six-month consultation with residents in the area.
