A fisherman has warned others about safety in Haverigg Harbour, Cumbria, after his boat collided with some unmarked railings.
Ernest Ireland was bringing in his boat after a fishing trip when he hit the submerged railings along the side of the River Lazy. North West Evening Mail reported that Mr Ireland managed to get back to shore as he watched his boat sink beneath the waves.
Whilst accepting some responsibility for the incident, he has now called for the council to install warning signs around the area so fellow fishermen do not encounter the same fate.
Mr Ireland said: "I am not the first to collide with them and I won’t be the last, though luckily in the cases I know of, there's been no loss of life. Next time, we might not be so lucky. I find it hard to believe in this day of health and safety gone crazy some sort of warning markers are not in place."
The railings were installed to prevent children falling in the sea and the Environmental Agency will investigate the incident to see if anything can be improved at the harbour.
