A new marine energy hub is set to be created on the banks of the Humber after the government granted final approval on the project.

The £450 million development has finally been given the go-ahead after an extensive planning process and the decision to build the hub has been described as "massively important for the region and the whole of the UK economy". Able Marine Energy Park at North Killingholme will be a key facility in terms of harnessing the offshore wind capability generated from the North Sea.

Humberside has long been highlighted as a key area for improving the UK's renewable energy outlets. Due to its location it can provide both onshore and offshore wind power which helps towards the government's target of increased use of renewable energy in the future. Ministers are aiming, by 2020, to have 15 per cent of the UK's energy demand to be generated through renewable means. This will help reduce the country's reliance of fossil fuels and other sources.

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin gave the final approval to the Able Marine Energy Park designed to support the North Sea's offshore wind industry. The project is being put up to tender with a number of contractors bidding to build the £170 million energy park quay front. The Construction Enquirer reports that Hochtief and Morgan Sindall are among the companies vying to land the contract.

Once a contractor is selected work is scheduled to begin in early 2014 with the 1,289 quay due to be completed in late 2016. This will coincide with supporting the next wave of Round 3 offshore wind farms.

Peter Stephenson, Able UK founder and executive chairman, said: "The major international companies needed to know that the UK was serious in its commitment to the future of offshore wind development.

“Today’s approval – coupled with the government’s support confirmed in the recent Autumn Statement – is just the message they required and will now enable us to progress negotiations with a range of clients wanting to bring jobs and investment to the Humber."
