London's Imperial College has been given the green light to construct a secondary campus in the western part of the capital.
The institute received the go-ahead from Hammersmith & Fulham Council on Wednesday (July 25th) to build the facility on the former BBC Wood Lane site, a project that is predicted to create 3,200 new jobs. The plan coincides with the major regeneration work going on around White City and officials have said that the new campus will be Imperial's home for all matters relating to technology, boosting the institute's research capabilities.
It will be able to give the college a place to deliver commercial application, translation and collaboration with industries and sit alongside Imperial's programme of postgraduate education. The construction is designed to build on the institute's already strong links with sectors such as engineering, the physical sciences and biomedicine.
Officials have unveiled a timeframe for which the work is due to be completed with the first phase, currently underway, to be finished by August 2012. This will include the construction of accommodation which needs to ready for postgraduates enrolling for the 2012/13 academic year. The facility will not solely be used for Imperial's needs with a four-star hotel as well as a number of community amenities such as retail, pharmacy and healthcare services also being created.
Other features within the plans include a health and biomedical research building, a home for new technology relating to start-up businesses developed by Imperial Innovations as well as postgraduate facilities. Officials hope that the construction projects will help the institute improve on its current standings in the league tables. Currently, according to The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2011/12, Imperial is the third best centre in Europe and eighth in the world overall.
John Anderson, Imperial West project director, said: "Imperial West will build on and further develop the college's existing strengths in engineering, the physical sciences and biomedicine and will become a second major campus for Imperial College London."
