Parents and children alike cheered as the security fencing was finally lifted to signal the opening of a new play area in South Shields.

A futuristic £125,000 playground situated yards away from Temple Park Centre in the north-east town was opened to much fanfare.

The Shields Gazette reported that dozens of children and parents attended the opening ceremony which included musicians from Westoe Colliery Brass Band playing Cliff Richard's 'Congratulations' upon the unveiling.

Councillors championed the play area, which features a cabin suspended 12 feet off the ground and only accessible by a climbing net, as "a wonderful facility".

Alex Donaldson, member of the council in the area, told the source: "Parents and children who came along said how happy they are with it. They had asked for something to be built near their homes, and now they have this."

The play area was made possible thanks to a grant from the lottery and the Somerset Standard also reported that a similar project has been made possible in Wansdyke thanks to a £238,000 donation.
