Northern Kent could be home to a holiday resort that could rival Disneyland Paris should plans be approved.

The £2 billion entertainment complex could be built on the Swanscombe Peninsula and would represent one of the biggest redevelopment projects the UK has ever seen. It has already gained the backing of development firm London Resort Company Holdings (LRCH) and has been set up by Brookfield Multiplex, Development Securities and Lafarge. The latter currently owns the 872 acre brown field site which would be home to the major theme park which organisers believe could rival the French theme park and other similar facilities across Europe.

Officials stated that plans moved a step closer after Paramount Pictures granted a license to use its name on the resort. The project, which if fully approved will be ready by 2018, has also received support by Dartford and Gravesham Borough Councils. The Paramount-backed venture would incorporate Europe's largest water park as well as a plethora of other amenities such as restaurants, cinemas, theatres, live music venues, hotels and other entertainment facilities.

Tony Sefton, project leader for LRCH, said: "Our vision is to create a world class entertainment destination, the first of its kind in the UK. We are at the start of a long journey, but have been encouraged by the support and buy-in we have had to date.

"We are particularly pleased with the appetite we are seeing from investors, who consider this a compelling investment proposition. Post Olympics, this is Britain's next major regeneration opportunity."

The complex is due to be situated near to Ebbsfleet International train station, which provides links to Paris, Lille and Brussels which would provide easier access from visitors coming from the continent. Officials are looking to be as successful as Disneyland Paris which has been an integral part of the Disney franchise since its inception in 1992. Despite initial problems with working conditions the complex has gone from strength to strength and is now the most visited attraction in Europe ahead of the likes of the Eiffel Tower and the London Eye.
