Liverpool FC are still on course to redevelop Anfield which will see the stadium be upgraded to a 60,000-capacity venue.

A new report from the club, published by Liverpool Echo, contains accounts of the Premier League side's current financial standings. Among these figures are costs relating to the expansion of Anfield plus others concerning previously shelved plans of building a new ground at Stanley Park. The £150 million scheme would see the extension of the Main Stand and Anfield Road end taking the capacity up by over 10,000.

While Liverpool have been considered one of the major clubs in the Premier League, their ground is still dwarfed by the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and a number of major European clubs. Even in the Premier League, Anfield is smaller than other grounds such as St James' Park (Newcastle), the Etihad Stadium (Manchester City) and the Stadium of Light (Sunderland). By increasing the capacity it will allow the Merseyside club to compete with the top sides over the continent in terms of matchday revenue.

The redevelopment of Anfield is part of major regeneration project around the area which involves Liverpool City Council and Your Housing Association. Ian Ayre, the managing director of the club, has already said that the relationship between all parties is currently “fantastic” and that the situation with the stadium expansion is still the same but has made progress in recent times.

Mr Ayre, told the Liverpool Echo: "Our expansion is one part of that [the regeneration project]. So I think the residents seem to be buying into it for that reason.

“This is about improving the area as a whole rather than Liverpool as a club improving its capacity. By everybody working together - and everybody winning - it makes for a much better solution than anything that has been looked at in the past."

While expansion plans off the pitch are moving at a pace, on the pitch Liverpool are starting to find form and conquered Wigan 4-0 away from home on Saturday (March 2nd).
