Liverpool FC have unveiled plans for a regeneration project in Anfield including the expansion of their stadium.

As part of a consortium led by Liverpool City Council with the support of Your Housing Group, the club and Keepmoat Anfield is set to benefit from widescale upgrades. The £260 million regeneration scheme is set to include new housing, public space, office buildings, shopping facilities, a 100-bed hotel as well as the creation of a new square and avenue with easy access for pedestrians.

The Merseyside club have been looking for way to expand their current stadium to be able to compete with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City in terms of matchday revenue. There have been numerous failed attempts to build a new stadium on the nearby Stanley Park and there was even a suggestion of a groundshare with local rivals Everton. However, the club is now looking to expand Anfield by increasing capacity of the main stand.

As part of the regeneration of the area, Liverpool has purchased a number of houses that flank the ground. They are currently still in the process of buying the remaining properties to ensure that the expansion programme goes ahead as scheduled. Detailed plans show that the houses will be replaced by the new avenue allowing room for the main stand to be extended.

Ian Ayre, managing director at Liverpool FC, said: "The unveiling of this vision for the wider regeneration of the Anfield area is another important step towards transforming the area for the better.

"The club has a track record of working successfully with LCC and others to drive forward improvements to the area, having made a major investment towards the transformation of Stanley Park."

While advancements off the field are moving at a pace, on the pitch the club is making great strides in improving their squad for the 2013/14 season. Having already signed Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas, the Reds are on the verge of securing the signature of Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
